November is National Adoption Month — a time to celebrate families built through love and to raise awareness about the many paths that lead to belonging.
But with that celebration often comes confusion and misconceptions about what adoption really looks like today. At Every Child, Inc., we work closely with children and families every day, and we know one thing for sure: adoption isn’t one-size-fits-all.
So, let’s break down a few of the most common myths we hear and share what adoption truly means in our community.
Myth 1: Only married couples can adopt.
Fact: Families come in all forms — single parents, unmarried couples, older adults, and LGBTQ+ families all play a vital role in giving children loving, stable homes. What matters most isn’t marital status, it’s the ability to provide safety, care, and connection.
Myth 2: Adoption is the “happy ending” to a child’s story.
Fact: Adoption is a new beginning, not an ending. It’s a transition that includes joy and love — but also grief, adjustment, and healing. Every adoption story is layered and unique, and families grow stronger by honoring every part of that journey.
Myth 3: Once the adoption is finalized, families no longer need support.
Fact: The need for support doesn’t stop on adoption day. In many ways, that’s when families need it most. Every Child continues to walk alongside families after finalization, helping them navigate new challenges and celebrate milestones together.
Myth 4: Older children or teens don’t want to be adopted.
Fact: Many older youth want and deserve a permanent family connection even if they don’t express it in traditional ways. Teens in care often crave stability, belonging, and someone who shows up for them unconditionally. Adoption isn’t just for babies; it’s for anyone who needs a forever home.
Myth 5: You have to be “perfect” to adopt.
Fact: There’s no such thing as a perfect parent, but there are countless people who are ready to open their hearts. What matters is compassion, patience, and the willingness to learn and grow alongside a child.
The Truth About Adoption
Adoption is about connection, not perfection. It’s about showing up, listening, learning, and loving through every chapter.
At Every Child, Inc., we’re here to support children and families before, during, and after adoption. Because family isn’t defined by paperwork, it’s built through love, care, and commitment.
